Terra Alta is located in Preston County, West Virginia. It was originally chartered as Portland, after Portland, Maine and was incorporated as Terra Alta in 1890. The name Terra Alta is derived from Latin, meaning 'High Land'. It was formerly known as Cranberry Summit from the abundant yield of cranberries found there at the time.
